Open calculatorMany expat investors encounter UCITS ETFs when researching long-term investing outside their home country. UCITS stands for Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities. It is a European regulatory framework used by many funds available to international investors.
For non-US investors, UCITS ETFs are often discussed because they may provide access to global markets through funds domiciled in jurisdictions such as Ireland or Luxembourg. These funds are commonly listed on European exchanges and may be available in different trading currencies.
UCITS ETFs can still carry market risk, currency risk, tracking risk and tax considerations. A fund being UCITS-compliant does not make it risk-free or automatically suitable for every investor.
Expats should be especially careful because their tax position may involve more than one country. Residence, domicile, citizenship, future retirement location and estate planning can all affect whether a particular investment structure is appropriate.
